A No-Nonsense Guide to Carbon Fiber and Halogen Quartz Heaters
We build these infrared lamps for the tough stuff—the kind of high-intensity heat where your standard resistive heaters just give up. Inside each quartz tube, there’s either a tungsten-halogen wire or a carbon fiber weave. The quartz is there to keep the filament safe, but it’s clear enough that the heat rays pass right through without getting stuck.
Picking Your Element
Here’s the thing about carbon fiber: it doesn’t act like a standard wire. Because it’s a weave, it has a much larger surface area. That changes how the heat hits your material, allowing it to soak in much deeper. Then you’ve got the halogen quartz lamps. These use a clever little gas cycle that catches evaporating tungsten and puts it right back onto the filament. It keeps the wire from burning out too fast, which means we can push them to much higher temperatures.
Getting the Setup Right
You’ll usually see these using R7s or Sk15 connectors. We stick with those because they click in securely. No loose fits, no sparking at the terminals—just a solid connection. And we use quartz for the envelope because it can handle the heat and stays transparent. But a word of warning: if you go for a high-wattage tube in a short space, you’re dealing with a lot of thermal stress on the end caps.It gets hot. Fast. Make sure your housing has plenty of vents. And for heaven’s sake, keep the tubes clean. If shop dust or oil gets on the glass, it creates hot spots. That’s how you end up with a cracked tube.
Real-World Use
These are the go-to for things like curing plastics or blowing PET bottles. The best part? They ramp up almost instantly. You aren’t wasting power or time just waiting for the machine to warm up. Since they heat the object itself rather than the air around it, you get way more control over the process. Just keep an eye on your power supply. High-voltage systems can be touchy. If your power fluctuates, you’ll see flickering or, worse, a dead filament. Keep the power steady, and these things will treat you right.
